CNN and AP: Obama to Nominate Hillary as Secretary of State after Thanksgiving

BY TAYLOR MARSH

President-elect Barack Obama plans to nominate Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state after Thanksgiving, an aide to his transition said Thursday. - AP

This is what I’ve been waiting for today. President-elect Obama stepping up through his transition team to announce the news on the day WJC handed over 200,000 names, but also agreed to substantial compromises on his global work, which obviously went a long way to letting the Obama-Biden team feel more confident about the arrangement, assuring that no conflicts of interest between WJC and the woman President-elect Obama wants as his secretary of state would occur going forward.

CNN reported this story earlier tonight. Jessica Yellen and Ed Henry confirmed the story.

As has been the case all along, Clinton senior adviser Philippe Reines repeated a statement that “any and all speculation about Cabinet or other administration appointments is for President-Elect Obama’s transition team to address.”

The cacophony around the bogus stories, the leaking from people with a “predilection for leaking things” likely pushed this announcement and details of when forward. Traditional and new media regurgitating whatever they’re told from anonymous sources, sucking anything coming their way up through a straw. I’ll let Digby say the rest for me this time.

Letting everyone know that this will come after Thanksgiving was important, because the roar right before the holiday if Obama and Clinton hadn’t come forward would have caused the press to go into a collective seisure. Uncertainty causing a problem, with so many important appointments still to come.

Hillary Rodham Clinton will finally get the job I believe not only suits her talents, intellectual prowess and political star power, but will also give President-elect Obama the best person at State he could possibly have in these very troubled times. It’s as official as it’s going to get until after Thanksgiving.

The Value of a Link on Google’s Home Page

Rival, Retreads and Other Irrelevance

As he picks Rahm Emanuel, Eric Holder, Tom Daschle and flirts with the former First Lady, there is a predictable chorus of criticism that going back to the Clinton years is not the change Barack Obama promised in his campaign.

Some of that was heard when he chose Joe Biden as his running mate, but Obama’s goal all along was to persuade voters wary of his inexperience that the best of the past would not be swept away in rhetorical enthusiasm for the new.

He is fulfilling that promise and concentrating on the real change from the Bush-Cheney years, bringing competence back to Washington, wherever he finds it–in the over-touted Lincolnesque “team of rivals” or in the best of the 1990s.

Holder, the new Attorney General who served under Janet Reno, will have the monumental job of restoring Justice to its pre-Ashcroft, pre-Gonzales stature, as he indicated in a speech last June, citing that “disrespect for the rule of law is not only wrong, it is destructive in our struggle against terrorism.”

Einstein s theory of relativity

Einstein and Millikan

In the previous post, I promised to say something more about Einstein and the photoelectric effect. It turns out that I already wrote about this, back in 2005. That post is the end of a long chain of links about the history of photons.

This is a good thing, because it frees me from having to try to type a new post with a baby on my lap. You’re kind of getting short-changed, though, so to make up for the lack of new content, here’s a relevant footnote from Chapter 1 of the book-in-progress:

Millikan thought the Einstein model lacked “any sort of satisfactory theoretical foundation,” and described its success as “purely empirical,” which is pretty nasty by physics standards. Ironically, those quotes are from the first paragraph of the paper in which he conclusively confirms the predictions of the theory (R.A. Millikan, Physical Review 7, 18 (1916)).

And now, back to baby duty.

Watchmen Trailer Burns Superman; Appropriates Philip Glass and Muse

nerds turned down dates and affluent effectively to make sure they truism this on time (5pm pt). wait, that’s not true, they not in a million years had dates or anything to do.we digress, the fresh zack snyder-helmed “watchmen” trailer is up and the interweb has basically peed their pants.while visually arousing, it doesn’t judge unromantic at all - a different period where slo-mo permeates all. whatever, the kids darling it already. this a specific appropriates philip glass’ famous “koyaanisqatsi” (from the token 1982 film, sounds like an updated story maybe) score and muse’s glass/steven reich influenced, “take a bow.”look for the purpose the before you can say ‘Jack Robinson’ no way in the trailer where a mob burns a superman dummy. snyder’s diss on current-day superheroes? (ironic in the light of how realistic “watchmen” is supposed buy dvd to be and how stylized and unrealistic it looks). we are finally warming to this though. it looks like it might be at least entertaining, rorschach’s tough-caricature growl aside (not as annoying as christian bale’s in “the dark knight”).the playlist - the sweet spot where movies and music answer.

Ayers Emerges from the Underground, Calls the Pigs

Employment security commission

Many of those who viewed the introduction of Bill Ayers into the presidential campaign as a low, dishonest campaign tactic have now taken to the idea that the former Weather Underground leader and pretend revolutionary was himself somehow mistreated by the media. The most egregious example is perhaps New Yorker editor David Remnick, as pointed out and deconstructed by ex-New Lefty Ron Radosh. As a confirmed Ayers-hater (I actually read Fugitive Days way back when), I refrained from commenting on Ayers during the campaign because I thought it not only a strategically silly line of attack—a position the election results seems to have vindicated—but the McCain campaign never got around to proving that Ayers and Obama were indeed “palling around.” Nevertheless, I have to agree with New Republic’s Leon Wieseltier that “I would not shake the man’s dirty hand.”

And now Ayers is attempting to defend himself—albeit unpersuasively. Writing in In These Times, Ayers talks about all the threatening emails he received in the past few months, which forced him to contact the hated Chicago pigs (An inverse of the “Days of Rage,” I suppose), and “the serial assassinations of black leaders [that] disrupted our utopian dreams” in the 1960s (He’s talking about Fred Hampton, not MLK). Read the whole piece here. There is plenty of stupidity on display, but I particularly like this line, coming as it does from a supporter of the Cuban dictatorship: “In a robust and sophisticated democracy, political leaders—and all of us—ought to seek ways to talk with many people who hold dissenting, or even radical, ideas.”

Canadian filmaker charged with murder…

i was reading about mark twitchell’s (http://www.themorningstarr.co.uk/2008/11/03/filmmaker-charged-with-murder/) being charged with murder, using a method that was almost too privy to the plot of his latest movie. the victim was tied to a chair and cut up. this makes me wonder how many people dream up murders and write about them, even make movies about them, but never get so bent that they actually go through with them. how many times a day do you of film makers actually gimcrack with carrying out the grizzly acts they rapture to write about?
